A new biomass and bio-gas facility in Melbourne, Ontario, Canada has been planned for construction by Genco Corporation. The company plans to construct the 11.4MW facility in two stages with the first stage producing 5MW until the remainder comes on-line.
The project falls under the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Pricing scheme which means the power generated will be available for sale at 11.9 cents per kilowatt hour.
The facility will use waste from the nearby hog producers in the form of methane and effluent. The project will also benefit from the sale of fertilizer and compost and the methane will be used in the g eneration of energy which will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority.
There are several factors that will count in favour of Genco’s application including the fact that the Ministry of Energy is projected to lose over 5,000 MW of energy from the shut down of non-renewable facilities and the Ministry has mandated that over 2,000 MW of energy should be generated from alternative sources.
At this point in proceedings there is no word on when the planned biomass facility will be brought on-line.
