North East Lincolnshire, England is going to have a new 65MW biomass power plant thanks to the approval that has been granted for Helius Energy plc to proceed with construction. The power plant will be built in Stallingborough on the south side of the Humber estuary.

It will be part of a proposed bioenergy development with hopes that an additional biomass processing facility will eventually be built which will become a bioethanol and biodiesel refinery. The intention is that spent grains from the bioethanol plant and glycerol from the biodiesel plant will eventually be used as the fuel feedstock for the power station.

In the meantime the power station will be fuelled by waste wood and other leftovers from the timber industry.

It is thought that the energy produced from the facility will power around 100,000 homes and will provide over 250 full time jobs during construction and around 75 permanent jobs when the plant is running. The power plant will avoid approximately 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

The estimation is that the facility will cost around £200 million to construct and it will be operational by 2011.
