Biomass | Sheffield Biomass Power Plant
Plans have been submitted by energy company E.On UK to build a new biomass power station on the site of the existing Tinsley Towers which are about to be demolished.
If approved, the biomass facility will cost approximately £60m to construct with the construction expected to start in 2009 and the first power to be produced in 2011.
The planned renewable energy plant is rated at 25MW which would produce enough power for about 40,000 homes by burning recycled wood and crops like willow and elephant grass. It will also avoid around 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year which would be the same as removing 20,000 cars from the road.
But first things first. the existing 250ft cooling towers are still upright and there is still no date set for their demolition. Approval for the new facility will also have to be granted once the old facility is gone.
