A new 99MW wind farm is planned in the Caribou Mountain area of New Brunswick, Canada constructed by SUEZ Energy which is an affiliate of SUEZ Renewable Energy NA. For want of a better name I will, until advised otherwise, refer to the project as the Caribou Mountain Wind Farm.

The Caribou Mountain Wind Farm is expected to be in operation by November 2009, the same date given for the Lamèque and Aulac wind farms which were both also recently announced. Between the 3 new projects there has been a total of around 213MW of electricity proposed from renewable energy for the province of New Brunswick. This follows the May 2007 RFP by NB Power for the purchase of up to 300 MW of wind-powered generation by November 2010 from potential private sector developers. Looks like they’ve just about met their goal. In fact, David hay, president and CEO of NB Power announced his pleasure that NB Power have reached a milestone in achieving their goal to have 400MW of wind energy in place by 2010 thanks to this project.

A 20-year power purchase agreement for up to 99 megawatts of wind power has been finalized between NB Power and SUEZ Energy. The company will construct, own, and operate the commercial wind farm in the Caribou Mountain area.

The facility will be devided into two distinct fields with one containing 16 wind turbines while the other, which will be located nearby, will consist of 17 wind turbines. The total power that will be provided on a yearly basis will reach somewhere in the vicinity of 330,500MWh. This will roughly be enough power to meet the power needs of 19,000 homes.

It is expected that the cost of the project will run to around $200 million.
