Construction has finally begun on a wind farm in South Australia that will power a 57 MW powe plant and generate enough electricity to power 30,000 homes. The project is at Clements Gap in South Australia’s mid-north and will cost $135 million.

Clements Gap is in the Barunga Range in South Australia about 20 minutes south of Port Pirie. It’s a region that is prone to consistently powerful winds and the site also has the advantage that it promises a simple grid connection, access for construction is easy and support from the community is strong. It’s a shame then that even though approval was originally given in 2003, political delays have plagued the start of construction until now.

The company overseeing construction is Pacific Hydro. It is estimated that the wind farm will generate around 170 GWh per year and will avoid 170,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year.
