A new wind power operation is being built by Renwable Energy Systems Americas, 30 miles north of Abilene, Texas. The $350 million to build the Hackberry Wind Project will be invested by GE Energy Financial Services and the wind power plant will produce 165MW of wind generated electricity from 72 x 2.3MW turbines for the residents of the City of Austin and surrounding areas.

With construction having started in January 2008, it is anticipated that the wind farm will be operational by December 2008 and comes with a 15 year power purchase agreement with the City of Austin through Austin Energy.

Renewable Energy Systems Americas will own and operate the facility through its wholly owned affiliate, Hackberry Wind, LLC.

A proportion of the power generated by the Hackberry Wind Farm plus the power created by the recently completed Whirlwind Energy Centre (also built by RES Americas) will be used to power all Austin city facilities with renewable energy as part of the city’s Climate Protection Plan.
