In Laramie County, Wyoming and commissioned and operated by Duke Energy is the Happy Jack Windpower facility. This is a wind power development that has a maximum capacity of 29.4MW of electricity generated from 14 2.1MW Suzlon S88 wind turbines.

The project is located next to the Happy Jack Landfill and is supplying renewable source energy to Cheyenne Light Fuel & Power under a 20 year renewable energy purchase agreement.

The facility began generating electricity in July 2008 and began full scale commercial operations on September 3, 2008 and produces enough electricity to power over 8,500 homes.

This completion of this project brings the total capacity of wind energy projects either planeed or developed by Duke Energy to well over 1500MW.

“Projects like this offer tangible proof in my mind that we can change the ultimate trajectory of power generation in our country and overcome and rise above obstacles that we find in our way,” said Wouter T. van Kempen, president of Duke Energy Generation Services, in dedicating the Happy Jack Wind Farm.

“Duke Energy Generation Services is busy looking at all kinds of renewable technologies, but we’re really spending most of our time on wind,” he added.
