The developers of the Peñascal Wind Farm, PPM Energy, expects the new 202MW wind project to begin producing energy in December 2008 to provide clean electricity for San Antonio and surrounding areas. The wind farm will be located in Kennedy County, Texas.

The wind farm is expected to consist of 84 wind turbines capable of generating 2.4MW each. The farm’s maximum capacity would mean that enough electricity will be generated to power 40,000 homes each year.

A 15 year agreement has been signed with San Antonio energy company CPS Energy to purchase 75MW of wind power generated electricity. This will add to the 500MW the company already receives from 2 other nearby wind farms and will help the company achieve its goal of achieving renewable energy capacity equivalent to 15% of its customers’ peak electrical demand by 2020.

Cost of constructing the Peñascal Wind Farm will run to around $440 million and it will cover an area of around 300 acres on privately owned land.
