Wind Power | Portland Wind Project
The development of four wind farms by Australian company Pacific Hydro will make up the Portland Wind Project. The wind farms will be located at Cape Bridgewater, Cape Nelson, Cape Sir William Grant and Yambuk in southwest Victoria.
The 195MW project represents the largest wind farm development in the Southern Hemisphere generating 670 GWh per annum. To generate this much power the farm will comprise 120 NEG Micron wind turbines and construction will cost AUD$330 million.
The electricity generated by the wind farm will produce enough clean electricity to power around 125,000 homes each year and it is estimated that 920,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be avoided each year which is the equivalent of removing 210,000 cars from the road.
The project is expected to be completed some time during 2008 with the benefits to the local community extending beyond the avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions. New jobs for regional Victoria will be created out of the project along with a revegetation project for the area.
