Wind Power | Stetson Wind Farm
The second major wind farm in Maine is about to be brought online with a capacity of 57MW which means that it will produce enough electricity to power around 23,500 homes.
The Stetson Wind Farm sits on top of the Stetson mountains on the long ridgeline in eastern Maine and has been completed by First Wind.
According to First Wind the Stetson Wind Farm will be replacing the equivalent of 331,000 barrels of oil each year and will be eliminating the emission of 76,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
The wind turbine towers of the Stetson wind farm are 262 feet tall and the blade diameters reach 253 feet. A secondary wind project nearby consisting of an extension of a further 17 wind turbines and known as Stetson II is in the permitting stage.
This secondary wind project is one of a number of proposed wind projects in the works in Maine, each in either the planning or permitting stages.
The Maine Governor’s Task Force on Wind Power Development has a goal of at least 2,000 MW of installed wind power capacity by 2015 and at least 3,000MW by 2020. This latest wind power project is a step towards meeting that goal.
