Wind Power | Tatanka Wind Farm
Straddling the North Dakota / South Dakota border on the Coteau des Prairies Ridge, the Tatanka Wind Farm will comprise of a total of 120 wind turbines, 60 of which will be located in Long Lake, McPherson County, South Dakota while the remaining 60 will be situated in Dickey County, North Dakota.
The project is a partnership between Acciona Energy North America Corp. and Acciona Windpower USA, both subsidiaries of Acciona S.A., the largest developer, owner and operator of wind farms in the world.
The capacity of the progress is listed as 180MW split across the states which has allowed it to circumvent South Dakota Legislature wich passed a law in 2006 that set the threshold for Public Utilities Commission jurisdiction over wind-farm construction at 100MW of electricity production. In this case, the electricity production in South Dakota sits at around 90MW.
PUC officials were also told a transmission line should run about 1,200 feet on the South Dakota side and eventually connect with the Montana-Dakota Utilities grid about 12 miles into North Dakota.
According to Acciona Wind Energy, the project was due to be completed by 31 December, 2007. As things stand at the moment, I haven’t been able to find any indication that it was completed on time and is operational or that it has been delayed.
