The first phase of a planned 240MW wind farm known as the Ventominho Wind Farm in northwestern Portugal has been commissioned. French renewable energy company EDF Energies Nouvelles has commissioned the first 152MW by bringing 76 wind turbines into service. This represents around half of the planned 120 turbine project.

When the project is completed the Ventominho Wind Farm will have a capacity of 240MW made up of the 120 2MW turbines supplied by German company Enercon GmbH. It is expected that the balance of the turbines will be constructed and operational by the end of 2008.

When it is completed it is reported that Ventominho will be the largest onshore wind energy project in Europe.

The Ventominho Wind Farm is jointly owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles and Endesa, SA.
