Wind Power | Wintering Hills Wind Project
Municipal approval has been received by Greengate Power Corporation (”Greengate”) from Wheatland County for the construction of its 150MW Wintering Hills Wind Project in Central Alberta. With the approval of this permit, Greengate has now received municipal approvals for four of its Alberta wind projects which now totals 700MW.
Greengate expects to begin construction on the 150MW Wintering Hills Wind Project in 2010 or 2011. Once completed, this project will produce enough power to provide clean wind-generated electricity to more than 50,000 Alberta homes. Overall, Greengate’s four approved Alberta projects totaling 700MW, will produce enough power to provide clean wind-generated electricity to more than 200,000 Alberta homes.
The project is being developed on around 25,000 acres of private land, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of the town of Drumheller. The project is on a high plateau of cultivated and grazing land, adjacent to a 138 kV transmission line with available capacity.
“We are extremely pleased that Wheatland County has granted a permit for the construction of our Wintering Hills project. We look forward to ongoing dialogue with the county and the community as a whole, as we move closer to the construction of this project,” said Dan Balaban, President and CEO of Greengate Power Corporation.
Wind projects provide numerous benefits to the local communities where they are built. For landowners, it provides an additional income stream which helps to sustain the rural lifestyle. Landowners can continue to farm, cultivate, and graze their land after wind projects are built. For the local economy, wind projects create jobs. Wind projects are enormous construction projects, which require a variety of skilled workers both during and after construction. From a county perspective, wind projects are a massive infrastructure investment, which significantly contribute to the tax base of the counties in which these projects are built.
