A new 192 MW wind power project known as the Waubra Wind Farm Project, which is located approximately 35km north-west of Ballarat in Victoria, is currently under construction by Acciona Energy. The Waubra Wind Farm consists of 128 wind turbines spread over a 16.5 x 10.5km site and will generate enough electricity to meet the electricity demands of 143,000 Australian homes.
Construction of the first turbine was completed and in place on 19 January and the crew aims to install 3 turbines per week. Acciona Energy hopes to have completed the project by the end of 2008, weather conditions permitting. The turbines are being installed to best capture the prevailing wind conditions on the site of existing agricultural land used for sheep and cattle grazing and potato growing.
The Waubra Wind Farm is expected to offset up to 635,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
